Low CTR on YouTube: what to check and what to change

A low click-through rate means people saw the thumbnail and title but did not click. Compare each video with your own channel's typical CTR and with the same traffic source, not with a number from someone else's channel. Fix the title first, then the thumbnail, one change at a time.

CTR is only meaningful next to its own context

CTR usually falls as a video is shown to a wider, colder audience. A video with a lower CTR and many more impressions can be doing better than one with a high CTR and few impressions.

Traffic source matters too: people who searched for the exact topic click more often than people browsing the home feed. Look at CTR by traffic source in YouTube Studio before deciding a title is the problem.

Fix a low-CTR video in order

  1. 1

    Find it in Studio

Analytics → Content, last 90 days, sort by impressions. Note videos whose CTR sits below your usual range.

  2. 2

Read the title on a phone

If the point is cut off after about 60 characters, or the topic is not clear without the thumbnail, the title is the first fix.

  3. 3

    Check title and thumbnail together

They should add to each other, not repeat the same words. A thumbnail with 2–4 words that the title does not say works well.

  4. 4

    Change one thing and wait

Give it 14–28 days and compare with the same period before.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CTR on YouTube?

It depends on the channel, the topic and where the impressions come from, so compare against your own videos. A video above your channel's usual range is doing well for you.

Why did my CTR drop after a video took off?

As YouTube shows a video to more people outside your audience, a smaller share of them click. That is normal if views keep rising.

Do tags affect CTR?

No. Viewers never see tags. The title and thumbnail decide the click.
