Changing titles

Does changing a YouTube title after upload hurt the video?

No, not by itself. Changing a title does not reset the video's views, comments or upload date. What changes is the promise people see, so the click-through rate can go up or down. Change one video at a time, keep the old title, and compare the 28 days after with the 28 days before.

The risk is a worse title, not the act of changing it

YouTube keeps showing a video to people it thinks will watch it. A clearer title can earn more clicks from those same impressions. A title that promises something the video does not deliver can earn clicks that end in quick exits, which is worse than no change.

Most of the fear comes from changing many things at once. If the title, thumbnail and description all change on the same day, a drop cannot be traced to anything.

Change a title without guessing

  1. 1

Write down the current title and the date

You need the old text to roll back and the date to compare against.

  2. 2

    Keep the same topic

Describe the same video better: clearer outcome, main phrase near the front, under about 60 characters so phones show it all.

  3. 3

    Change only the title

Leave the thumbnail alone for now, so you know what caused any change.

  4. 4

    Wait at least 14 days

Then compare impressions, click-through rate and views with the same number of days before the change.

  5. 5

    Keep or roll back

If click-through rate fell, restore the old title. iutu.be keeps the previous text so undo is one click for 30 days.

Change titles with a 30-day undo

Connect your channel, pick a video, approve a new title. iutu.be stores the old one so you can roll back in one click.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing the title reset my views?

No. Views, likes, comments and the upload date stay the same. Only the text changes.

Does YouTube re-index a video after a title change?

YouTube reads the new title and uses it for search and recommendations from then on. That is why a clearer title can help search traffic to an old video.

How often can I change a title?

There is no published limit, but changing it often makes it impossible to tell what worked. One change, then wait two to four weeks.

Should I change titles on videos that are doing well?

Usually not. Start with videos that get impressions but fewer clicks than your channel's normal range.
